Over 14 lakh used Delhi Metro daily during Games

New Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS) Delhi Metro seemed to be the transport of choice during the Commonwealth Games, carrying as many as 14.47 lakh commuters including 1.24 lakh spectators and volunteers, daily on an average since Oct 3.

A Delhi Rail Metro Corporation (DMRC) official said Thursday that from Oct 3 till 7 p.m. Thursday, the Metro witnessed an average daily ridership of 14.47 lakh.

On Thursday, the day of the closing ceremony of the Games, around 5.34 lakh passengers travelled on the entire Metro network as all central government offices, shops and commercial establishments were closed.

The Metro runs a fleet of 129 trains on a network of 138 km that has 117 stations across Delhi and the suburbs of Noida and Gurgaon.

The DMRC, in order to connect to some of the Games venues, constructed the Central Secretariat-Sarita Vihar Metro section in a record time of 41 months and opened it Oct 3 just hours before the Games.

'This was so that DMRC could provide services to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Metro station for the Commonwealth Games. This line has been made by the DMRC in a record time which is probably among the fastest Metro constructions worldwide,' the official added.
