Bru refugee problem takes new turn

Agartala, Oct 14 : In a new twist to the Bru refugee problem, the Bru Displaced Welfare Organisation (BDWO) today expressed dismay over the ongoing preparation for the settlement of refugees after they are being repatriated to Mizoram.

With a view to the smoothly running of development and administration, the BDWO wants to remain as a model village under the district of Memit only but the inclusion of Lunglei and Kolasib districts was against the will of the organisation.

John Lalnuntlunga, general secretary of Bru organisation on Thursday viewed that the Mizoram Government and the Centre should hold wide-ranging talks with the Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF) leaders to discuss on the current deadlock at the earliest.

The Mizoram Government is striving for meaningless repatriation of Bru refugees in consultation with the then MBDPF president Elvis Chorkhy. “It is not a curative measure and not the initiative measure as well and therefore the refugee body may be symbolically compelled to launch the unprecedented democratic agitation rally and indefinite hunger strike in Aizawl and in Delhi.

“Whenever we restraint to the meaningless repatriation of Bru refugees, we were wrongly blamed as against the Government order but the reality is to reach out our satisfaction of signing an agreement and not orally’, he pointed out.

It alleged that there has been no credible response to the refugees’ desire for resolving the dispute. “It was Elvis Chorkhy who was the wrong doer even after he has been kicked out from the president ship of MBDPF in accordance with the constitution of MBDPF”, he added.

“We feel surprise at the way Mizoram Government is handling the issue with Elvis Chorkhy and this is absolutely baseless. Even though, we are still expecting to give fresh impetus to the repatriating progress of Bru refugees but the Mizoram Government should draw attention to the majority voice of the people”, he said.
