Quakes rock region

Shillong, July 27: Three consecutive low-intensity earthquakes rattled parts of Meghalaya and Assam in the wee hours today.

Officials of the Central Seismological Observatory, Upper Shillong, said the first earthquake occurred at 12.43am with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was at Barpeta in Assam. The tremors were felt in Shillong too.

The second earthquake struck at 7.52am, measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale. It was followed by another low- intensity earthquake at 8.16am with a magnitude of 2.4.

The epicenter of both was 22km from the Central Seismological Observatory.

No damage was reported from anywhere.

The officials of Seismological Observatory said since Guwahati and Shillong are located in Zone V, the region is in the highest risk area on the country’s seismic map and frequent tremors are experienced. Among the 10 most powerful earthquakes recorded in history, the Assam earthquakes of 1897 and 1950 had measured 8.8 and 8.6 on the Richter scale.

An official of the Meghalaya civil defence and home guards department said that preparedness of home guards personnel had improved after a series of mock-drills carried out by the department.

From 2006, the department has trained nearly 31,000 people as medical first responders required in the event of earthquakes.
