61st Republic Day concludes with beating the retreat


R-Day celebrated unhindered

Imphal, January 27: Beating the retreat of the 61st Republic Day was held here at 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground here with the Governor of Manipur, Gurbachan Jagat as the chief guest. Cultural shows and distribution of prizes to the position holders of march past and other competitions marked the function.

In the march past competition for the male uniform category, the first prize went to 6th IRB while the second and third position went to BSF and CRPF respectively. For the female uniform category, civil police secured the first position while Home Guards won the second prize.

NCC Senior Girls won the first position while the second and third went to NCC Senior Air Wing and NCC Senior Boys respectively. The 1st MR School boys and girls won the first position in the competition of school contingents, TG Higher Secondary School won the second position and while the third went to Johnston Higher Secondary School.

In the college contingents category, GP Women's College secured the first position, the second prize went to DM College of Arts and the third went to DM College of Science.

Assam Rifles Band Party won the first position in band parties competition while the second and the third went to 2nd MR and Sainik School respectively. In the cultural troops competition (valley category), Geeta Ideal Dance Training Academy, Khangabok, Leishemba Amaiba Pena Haraorou and Amuyaima Nat Sankritan Dance Academy won first, second and third prizes respectively, while for the hill category, the first position went to Lamhil Kuki Cultural Research Centre, Haokip Veng, the second position went to Tuinem Dance Troupe, Ukhrul district and the third position to Tuisem Dance Club, Tamenglong district and Monsang Pantha Youth and Cultural Club, Chandel jointly.

Health (NRHM) emerged the winner in the tableau display competition while MANIREDA and Education-S (SSA) secured the second and third position. While in the category of gate construction, Forest Department took the first, Tribal Development secured the second and RD & PR the third position.

Special prizes were also presented to 21 others who participated in the parade. The Republic Day celebration in Imphal was held amidst tight security in Imphal with the main function at Kangla fort with the state Governor, Gurbachan Jagat as chief guest. Chief Minister, O Ibobi presided over the function.

On the occasion of Republic Day, police medals for gallantry were also given to 11 police personnel who were earlier announced as recipients of the medals. The personel were Y Kishorchand Meitei, inspector of Thoubal police, M Sanjit, jemadar of 1st MR, M Premkumar, ASI of Imphal west police, constable P Lokendro of Imphal west police, constable of S Robindro, rifleman, H Guneshwar of 1st MR, havildar, K Shachikumar of 5th IRB, rifleman Md Tajuddin of 2nd IRB, rifleman T Haridas of 3rd IRB and rifleman Md Doulat Khan of 2nd IRB.

Government also announced remission of sentence period of 11 convicted prisoners lodged in Central jail, Sajiwa. Out of the 11 prisoners, sentence period of seven were cut down for 30 days while the rest four for 15 days.

Prisoners whose sentence were remitted for 30 days are Thoidingjam Modhujit (45) son of Th Tomba of Uripok Achom Leikai, Imphal, Tongbram Kerani (63) of Thanga Tongbram Leikai of Bishnupur district, Sandham Tomba (57) of Haoreibi Mayai Leikai of Imphal west, Vanlalven (37) son of Vungluai of Tuithabi village of Tuibong, Churachandpur district, Nengliankhum (35) son of Tuithabi village of Churachandpur, Moirangthem Ibobi (75) of Yairipok Top Chingtha of Thoubal district and W Jabumani (61) son of W Kanhai of Lambal.

The four prisoners who got 15 days remission for their sentence period were Nilmohon Molik (49) son of Shokhichoron of Serou part-I of Thoubal district, Tongbram Shakthiba (58) son of late Thanga Tongbram Leikai, his son Mani (32) and Oinam Birachandra (61) son of O Anganghal of Kakyai Lampak of Bishnupur district.
