Imphal | Sept 15: Coming down heavily on the Committee on Protection of Tribal Areas, Manipur (COPTAM) demand for inclusion of an early devolution of power to the Autonomous (Hill) District Council (ADC), the Tangkhul Co-ordination Committee (TCC) said that it would not extend support the 48-hour bandh called by the COPTAM effective from midnight of September 15.
The TCC in a statement signed by its media & publicity secretary Tennoson Pheiray, said that the TCC in no way will accept the ADC election, the declaration of ADC election by the apex UNC as “null and void” stands committed and valid. The question of devolution or delegation of power to the ADCs as demanded by COPTAM is contrary to the vision, goal resolution and declaration of the UNC and Naga People’s Convention,” TCC said. The COPTAM has called for 48-hour a general strike which would be effective from the midnight of September 15 till September 17 pressing the state government to fulfill their demands.
Among others, the COPTAM is also demanding restoration of original hill districts boundary, transfer of land records to ADCs in hill districts, devolution of adequate power to ADCs, protection of land and rights of the hill tribals in Manipur.
While announcing the general strike, the COPTAM has also appealed to all tribal organisations, leaders and public to extend full cooperation and support the general strike to achieve its ‘genuine’ demands bear with the inconvenience to be caused during the bandh as part of showing unity in the struggle for protection of the tribal land and rights.
Different kinds of intensive agitations will follow unless the government failed to find an amicable solution to their demands,COPTAM said and warned that they will start launching postal and banner campaign to put pressure on government to fulfill its demands.
The decision for the general strike and campaign was taken at a joint meeting held with district-wise executives and social organizations held on September 6, the statement claims.
Medical departments and media personnel would be exempted from the general strike while others shall be strictly prohibited during the bandh, COPTAM said.
