Mizoram enforces strict action against arms smuggler

Shillong, Feb 19 : Mizoram Chief Minster Lal Thanhawala today said his government had enforced strict vigil along the Indo Bangla and Myanmar borders to curb smuggling of arms and counterfeit currency notes.

''We will not allow smuggling of arms, ammunition or any illegal items from either Myanmar or Bangladesh. My government has enforced strict vigil along the two international borders,'' he told reporters after inaugurating the Mizo boys' hostel and new Mizoram House here.

Mr Thanhawla, who returned to power in 2008 after the Mizo National Front government, headed by former rebel leader Zoramthanga, said, ''Mizoram had become a free state of gun running and counterfeit currency after I took over as the Chief Minister.'' In the past, the Chief Minister had said, smuggling of arms and counterfeit Indian currency was a major security concern, but it no longer was the case now as peace has once again returned to Mizoram.

''All such persons involved in smuggling have been identified over the years and has been arrested, so there are no reports of such cases now,'' Mr Thanhawla claimed.-UNI
