PM urged to allow Manipur to import foodgrains

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on Saturday urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to allow the state to import foodgrain and petroleum products from the neighbouring country Myanmar through the Moreh-Tamu sector along the border.

Attending the 55th Meeting of the National Development Council at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday, the Chief Minister also requested the Centre for deployment of Border Security Forces along the border for effective surveillance and better border management, Joint Director of Manipur Information Centre Meghachandra Kongbam informed. Singh informed that 45 acres of land at Moreh was handed over to the Department of Border Management under Ministry of Home Affairs for establishing an Integrated Check Post (IPC), according to Kongbam .

He also emphasised the need for more extensive roads especially in the northeast states and referred to the acute shortage of essentials due to the extremely poor condition of National Highway-39 and National Highway-53 in Manipur. The Chief Minister felt that the main reason for the poor state of affairs was due to inadequate allocation with Border Road Organization. (UNI)
