Vaiphei People's Council, Zillai flay chief’s killing

IMPHAL/Lamka, Nov 27: Vaiphei Peoples Council (VPC), the apex body of the Vaiphei tribe today sought explanation over the killing of Tatjang chief within three days even as it has issued a strongly worded statement of condemnation.

“The Vaipheis can no longer bow down before any individual or group or organization and tolerate such unwanted acts against its members without any valid reason(s) or cause(s) and will take up the matter seriously,” the VPC said.

Alleging that the armed group UKLF was behind the killing, the statement said Ngamkholet Baite was killed on November 24 at about 4.30 pm by two UKLF cadres who called him out and brought him from Tupiching village to have a meeting with 8 Assam Rifles and UKLF leaders at Aigejang post, Chandel and shot him at point blank in front of his wife at Chahmol hill in Chandel district.

It is against this backdrop that the VPC statement issued by its President P Kamkholal and General Secretary Ginkhenpau Baite has demanded the concerned organization to clarify the ‘cause of death’ within three days.

Meanwhile, Vaiphei Students’ Association (Zillai) has also flayed the killing of Ngamkholet Baite.

Saying that UKLF violated SoO ground rules by killing the chief, Zillai in a press release expressed wonder how Assam Rifles troops present in the area could not save Ngamkholet from the hand of the perpetrators.

Zillai warned that it would launch intense agitation if the culprits are not booked and necessary actions are initiated against UKLF by SoO Monitoring Cell and Assam Rifles.
