Imphal, Nov 27(HNS): Villagers of Tadubi in Senapati district today stayed out of the inauguration function of a water supply scheme in their village by PHED minister, TN Haokip.
Villagers stayed away from the function in response to a boycott called by the UNC and other bodies. Seats remained largely unoccupied at the inaugural function which was followed by a public meeting.
The water supply scheme inaugurated today was constructed by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) with funds from the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resource (NLCPR). The estimated cost of the scheme was Rs 430 lakh.
Addressing the function as chief guest, TN Haokip observed the importance of the water supply scheme for the villagers of Tadubi and its surrounding areas. The scheme will able to supply safe drinking water to at least six villages surrounding Tadubi village.
He also recalled the hindrances faced by PHED officials during the construction of the scheme and said as the site is located on the steep side of the hill.
The scheme has been taken up for providing safe drinking water to the villagers. Hence, co-operation of the villagers is much required to make it a success, Haokip said.
Making a comment on the non-participation of the villagers at the public function, the minister said the villagers knew that the scheme is meant for them but they could not participate in it because of the decision of some NGOs not to cooperate with the government. “In this regard I don’t want to make a comment,” he cut short.
According to PHED officials, the scheme was sanctioned in 2008 and the ground construction work also started in the same year. The scheme is targeted to supply safe drinking water to around 25,683 villagers in the villages of Tadubi, Sajouba, Makhel, Kaibi and Tabuphai. The water is to be pumped up from Nabai river.
