Four engineers, driver abducted in Manipur

Imphal, Nov 27 : Unidentified persons suspected to be militants, kidnapped four engineers of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) today along with the driver while they were on their way to attend a water supply scheme inauguration function at Tadubi village in Senapati district 90 kilometres from here.

The incident reportedly took place near Mayangkhang village, 50 km north of here in Senapati district when the engineers were travelling in a white Bolero (MN01W-7949) around 9 am this morning, reports reaching here said.

However the police recovered the Borelo which was abandoned around 10.30 am at a place between Daili and Yaikongpao villages along national highway 39, L Vaiphei, officer in-charge of Kangpokpi Police Station told this reporter over phone when contacted. “We didn't know when and where the officials were exactly abducted”, the officer in-charge said. The spot from where the vehicle was recovered was three kilometres south of Kangpokpi PS.

Police, in association with Assam Rifles personnel launched a massive manhunt to rescue the officials namely H Ganeshwor of Pishumthong, K Rameshwar, both assistant engineers, section officer K Manigopal, Surveyor N Somi and driver A Ibomcha of the PHED.

Meanwhile, Manipur-based militant outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (MC)’s secretary publicity and information Paikhomba while claiming responsibility for the abduction through a press statement which was made available to the local media in the evening, asked the authorities concerned of the department to contact them in order “to come to an amicable solution” in time. The outfit has charged the officials with being involved in corruption.
