ISRO to launch 2 Satellites to study, monitor environment

Bangalore, Sep 28 : Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch two dedicated satellites for monitoring greenhouse gas, aerosol emissions and environment, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh said today.

Delivering the 11th ISRO-JNCASR Satish Dhawan Memorial Lecture on 'Two Cultures Revisited: Some Reflections on Environment-Development Debate in India' here said while ISRO's own dedicated satellite for monitoring greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions would be launched in 2012, the forestry satellite would be launched in 2013 to enable real-time monitoring of both deforestation and afforestation in the country.

At present the environment monitoring was being done once in two years, while it would be a continuous process after both the satellites are launched.

He said the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests will be co-financing National Institute of Climate and Environment, being established by ISRO and working closely with the Space Applications Centre to model and monitor the health of the Himalayan glaciers.

He said the Ministry had decided to ensure that ISRO was an integral part of climate science and climate change negotiations team because of the tremendous capability it had built up in this area.
