Nagaland MLAs pray for peace

Kohima, March 14: The legislators of Nagaland today observed the day as a “day of prayer and fasting” at Naga Shisha Hoho prayer centre near here with focus on cleansing corruption and violence from the state.

A daylong programme organised by the Nagaland Baptist Church Council was led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio, Opposition leader Tokheho Yepthomi, Speaker Kiyanilie Peseyie and former chief minister K.L. Chishi.

The programme focused on cleansing corruption and violence from society. Many prominent Naga clergymen from different denominations shared their views on the prevailing situation in Nagaland.

Rio and Yepthomi called for a corruption-free society to take forward the Naga people to new heights.

This was the first time when the members of the ruling party and the Opposition came together to pray forgiveness from god and vowed to work sincerely for society.

The general secretary of the council, Rev. Anjo Keikung, Rev. Z. Keyho, Rev. Takatemjen Ao, Rev. Ricky Medom, Rev. V.K. Nuh, Rev. L. Sanchu, Rev. Zhabu Terhuja and Rev. Z.K. Rochill were present on the occasion.

Rev. Nuh called for addressing the realities of Nagaland, including self-determination of the nation, pain and suffering of the people.

He is also a member of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation, which is brokering peace among the Naga factions.

According to him, in Naga society the streets are filled with violence and corruption and the places of worship with apostasy and indifference.

Rev. Nuh said Naga national politics has turned into factionalism marked by killings and the guardians of the law have become the lawbreakers.

All the speakers dwelt on the current corruption scenario in the state. Nagaland is rated one of the most corrupt states in the country.
