Panaji: Most boxing bouts are lost outside the ring, and looking at five-time world champion Mary Kom's body language, it was clear she had a lot on her mind before the fight. But, then, even though China's Ren Cancan took away the semifinal 11-7, there was no missing that Mary was a true fighter who doesn't give up till the end.

The loose head gear problem persisted. Mary had faced it in her quarterfinal bout but it was in the semis that she had to pay a heavy price for it; while adjusting the head gear her opponent landed a punch on Mary's stomach.

Everything was against Mary - as her opponent stood 5-feet-6 against her 5-feet-2 and also weighed more while Mary had to pile up as she weighs around 48kg. The partisan home crowd and the Turkish referee Berna Yurtsever's biased officiating played a crucial role in her loss.

Mary's frustration doubled in the second round when the 22-year-old Ren kept pushing her down and locking her hand under her arm to put the breaks on the world champ's punching, the referee strangely deciding to keep cautioning Mary while turning a blind eye to her opponents ploy.

"I had my punches ready for her (opponent) but I had no answer for her holding tactics," Mary told TOI when contacted.

Since both boxers were southpaws, Mary's most potent weapon - the left hook - didn't get into the range of the target. Her taller opponent succeeded in keeping Mary at a distance. And each time Mary broke through, the Chinese adopted holding tactics.

"I tried everything, but more than punching, my opponent was running around the ring. I had to get inside and connect but at the end of the day I think it was not enough," said Mary.

Also, had Mary kept a shell-guard and utilised a burst of straight short punches while getting into the range of her taller opponent, things might have been different but that has always been the bane of Indian boxers. Had Mary not thrown caution to the wind and kept a tight guard, the Chinese would have been at the receiving end.

To sum it up, it was her poor height, excessive hooking and loose guard in the 3rd and 4th rounds that did the damage. Also, the scoring system appears to be a major puzzle as often; boxers who made full contact which fetch points as per AIBA rules strangely got none while just a tap from their opponents got a positive response from the judges. Eventually, it was the 2-3 points that she never got and also 2-3 gifted points that her opponent never scored that made the difference. Advantages of playing host.

NEW DELHI: A five-time world champion but Indian woman boxer M C Mary Kom will still have to undergo trials to find a berth in the Asian Games squad in an all-new weight category.

The Manipuri, however, is unfazed by the challenge and said that she can pull it off riding on sheer willpower and experience.

Mary Kom (48kg), who returned on Tuesday after clinching a historic fifth World Championship title in Barbados, originally competed in the 46kg category.

She went up a couple of kilograms ahead of this year's World Championships and is all set to bulk up more to fight in the 51kg, one of the three weight categories to have got the International Olympic Committee's nod for the Olympics and Asian Games.

Back after a gruelling journey, Mary Kom will tomorrow head to the ring once again for the second phase of trials. The initial trials before the World Championships were deemed "inconclusive" by the Indian Boxing Federation.

"I don't have any problem in putting on weight. I have 10 years of experience in international boxing. I'm a mentally strong boxer and have the willpower to continue competing," the 27-year-old mother-of-two from Manipur told reporters.

The IBF was willing to delay the trials by a week to give Mary Kom a break after the World Championships but the boxer wanted to have it over and done with as quickly as possible.

"We told her that she can take a break because she fought five rounds in the World Championships and then endured a very long journey but she would have none of it. Even after her final bout in Barbados, she trained for two hours. She is truly a very resolute athlete," said IBF Secretary General Col P K Muralidharan Raja.

"Yes, we had trials in Bhopal but they were inconclusive and therefore it was necessary to have another round. I'm sure Mary Kom would do well," he added.

Asian Games are scheduled from November 15 in Guangzhou, China next month and Mary Kom's main challenger in her division will be statemate L Sarita Devi, a former World Championship silver-medallist, but who lost in the second round of the just-concluded edition.

"I don't think I would have a problem. I am just coming off a big tournament and would be in good form," Sarita said.

Mary Kom is one of the six brand ambassadors for the controversy-marred Commonwealth Games but the only one who would not be seen in action at the event.

Expressing her disappointment, Mary Kom said, "I'm hurt that women's boxing has not been included in the Commonwealth Games. It was saddening but these things are not in my hands."

Col Raja said all efforts were made to get women's boxing included in the CWG roster but it ultimately missed the bus due to lack of support in the Commonwealth Games Federation board.

"We spoke to (CGF chief) Mike Fennell but were told that the Board didn't accept it," he said.

For all the accolades she has won in the ring, Mary Kom is not too keen to see her twin sons follow in her footsteps and would prefer seeing them wielding a tennis racquet.

"I don't want my kids to go through what I have gone through to make it this far. I don't want them to get hurt and do all the hard work that I have done," she said.

"I would want them to be tennis players instead," she laughed.

New Delhi | Sept18: MC Mary Kom claimed a historic fifth successive Women's World Boxing Championship gold with a thumping 16-6 win over Steluta Duta of Romania in the 48kg weight category final. The former Khel Ratna awardee from Manipur thus remained the only boxer to have won a medal in each edition of the World Championship. Mary Kom, a mother-of-two, defeated Alice Kate Aparri of Philippines 8-1 in the semifinal on Friday to assure herself of at least a silver in the sixth edition of the competition.

However, there was disappointment as well for India when Kavita (+81kg) settled for a bronze after losing 2-14 to Ukraine's Kateryna Kuzhel in the semifinals.MC Mary Kom continued her chase for a historic fifth successive World Championship gold by becoming the only Indian boxer to enter the finals of the event with a thumping win in the last-four stage here.
Mary Kom (48kg) defeated Alice Kate Aparri of Philippines 8-1 in the semifinals to assure herself of at least a silver in the sixth edition of the event.

The former Khel Ratna awardee will now face old rival Steluta Duta of Romania who defeated Kazakhstan's Nazgul Boranbayeva 10-5. However, there was disappointment as well for India when Kavita (+81kg) settled for a bronze after losing 2-14 to Ukraine's Kateryna Kuzhel in the semifinals. But Mary Kom, a mother-of-two from Manipur who is the only boxer to have won a medal in each edition of the World Championship, ensured that the Indian camp had something to cheer about.
Mary Kom had last faced Aparri way back in 2004 and had come out triumphant and she made sure that her all-win record against Filipino remained intact.

"I never take my opponents easy. On her day anybody can be dangerous. I have beaten her twice before and that gives me a good feeling but I can't really say whether it would be easy or tough," she said.

Bridgetown | Sept 19: A historic fifth successive World Championship gold medal under her belt but star Indian woman boxer MC Mary Kom remains hungry for more and will not consider hanging up her gloves before finishing on podium at the 2012 London Olympics.

The 27-year-old mother-of-two from Manipur brushed aside the rising international competition in women's boxing to clinch a fifth gold medal at the World Championships on Saturday by thrashing old foe Steluta Duta of Romania 16-6 in the light fly weight 48kg finals.

Dubbed 'Magnificent Mary' by the International Boxing Association for her historic feat, the diminutive counter-puncher is the only woman boxer to have clinched a medal in each of the six World Championships, starting with a silver in the inaugural edition in 2001.

"I am overwhelmed and don't even know how to describe what it feels like. I am just so happy to have done it," the former Khel Ratna awardee said.

Balancing a demanding training schedule with the responsibility of being the mother of two young children is not easy but with women's boxing finding a place in the 2012 Olympics, Mary Kom said has a reason to continue doing the tough twin jobs.

"It's very demanding and emotionally draining to leave my sons behind for competing and training. But I have somehow managed to do it so far and hopefully I will continue doing it till at least the London Olympics. I want to win an Olympic medal, don't want to go before doing that. That's my dream," she said.

"I know age would be a factor but if I continue to train hard and remain fit, I think, I would be able to compete and win a medal," she added.

Women's boxing would make its debut at the London Olympics in three weight categories -- flyweight (48-51kg), lightweight (56-60kg) and middleweight (69-75kg).

Mary Kom will have to bulk up substantially for the fly weight division but she is confident of coming through.

"Putting on weight and adjusting to it is always tough but since I would be giving trials for the November Asian Games in the same division, I think I will have enough to time to adjust," she said.

Talking about her bout, Mary Kom said she could feel the pressure of expectations but was never nervous against Duta, whom she had beaten in the World Championship finals of 2006 and 2008 as well.

"There was pressure on me but it didn't unsettle me. I was not nervous. I just kept telling myself that I had to win. I kept my cool, observed her in the first two rounds and then attacked her in the third and fourth round," Mary Kom said.

"Although her punches seemed more powerful then last time, I knew her game way too well to get unsettled by that. In the end it was not very tough because I knew her technique. I am aware of her game," she added.

The just-concluded edition was the biggest in terms of participation with 72 countries in fray but Mary Kom said the competition, at least in her category, was not too tough. In fact, the Indian said it was perhaps her easiest campaign so far.

"I think the first World Championship gold that I won in 2002 in Antalya ,Turkey was the toughest. This one was easy. I was actually having a good time here," she chuckled.
"My foot movement was good and that helped because you can no longer stay static and out-punch your opponent. You have to constantly move in the ring. Besides, my body felt great, I was in good shape," she added.

Asked whether she thought anybody would ever be able to match her feat, Mary Kom said, "I don't know. It's a sport and records do get broken at some point. I hope mine stays but then you never know what is there in future. I can only continue doing what I do best and that is fight with all my heart inside the ring."

On how she has managed to stay ahead of the continuously improving international competition, Mary Kom said, " It's god's gift and bit of my will power. I don't like giving up without a good fight."

India, who were overall champions in the 2006 Delhi edition, finished with just one gold and a bronze, through Kavita (+81kg), this time and Mary Kom said the rather disappointing performance is a wake-up call.

"We have to bring in fresh ideas to remain competitive. Because women's boxing is an Olympic sport, all the countries are trying hard to improve themselves and even we have to work hard to remain strong contenders," she said.

Bridgetown | Sept 16 : MC Mary Kom (48kg) remained firmly on course for a historic fifth successive gold by advancing to the semifinals along with Kavita (+81kg) to assure India of two medals in the sixth Women's World Championships.

Mary Kom beat Lynsey Holdaway from Wales 9-2 in the quarter-final to set up a clash with Alice Appari of the Philippines, whom she had beaten in their only face off six years ago.

The mother-of-two from Manipur took a narrow 2-1 lead in the opening round and built on it in the next two rounds to be 6-2 ahead by the third round. In the final round, Mary Kom launched an all-out attack to seal the issue in her favour.

"It was not all that tough for me. I had never faced her before but didn't have to slog too much. So far so good," the 27-year-old said after the bout.

"Despite the increased competition, I think I can still dominate my category. I am not bragging but it hasn't been very tough for me despite the fact that I have already played three rounds. My body is also feeling great," she said.

Talking about her next-round opponent, Mary Kom, who was conferred the Khel Ratna award last year, said, "I know this girl. I beat her in 2004 and hopefully even this time I would win. I will try my best. I have my fingers crossed for a fifth consecutive gold."

Dubbed 'Magnificent Mary' by the International Boxing Association, the Indian has the unique feat of having won a medal in each of the previous World Championships. She was silver-medallist in the inaugural edition and has not settled for anything less then a gold after that.
Among other Indians, Kavita too advanced to the semifinals by beating Adriana Hosu of Romania 9-6. She will face Kateryna Kuzhel of the Ukraine in the last-four stage on Friday.

But there was disappointment as well, with Laxmi Padiya (81kg) losing 4-18 to Kazakh Marina Volnova on Wednesday night.

The current edition of the World Championship features 72 countries. The increased competition has hit 2006 overall champions India rather hard with just two medals assured this time.
