BSNL slashes inter-state call rates

Shillong, Dec 6 : In an attempt to boost landline services, the BSNL has slashed flat local rates for all inter-state calls made using landlines for Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.

The Chief General Manager of North East -1 Telecom Circle Rajesh Gupta announcing this today said the state-run telecom giant has reduced thelandline STD charges from December 1 by increasing the pulse rate from two minutes to three minutes.

“This new rate will be applicable for calls made to anywhere in the country. BSNL’s tariff will translate into 0.44 paise per second, the lowest of all telecom plans,” Gupta said.

Admitting that there was a huge decline of about five lakh landline customers during the past five years in the three states, Gupta said, “We are trying to add value to our service and make it cheaper than mobile network service and also make it attractive with SMS facility in the near future.”

While earlier it was 80 paise to Rs 1.20 depending upon the tariff plan for two minutes, now it will be same for three minutes. “Local calls are already charged at a pulse rate of 180 seconds or three minutes. This will make thelandline to landline calls from BSNL cheaper than from any mobile service. Currently, mobile STD call charges vary from one paise per second to 1.2 paise per second,” Gupta said.

The facility will be automatically available to all fixed line customers for all tariff plans. The revised call charges would not be applicable to PCOs and for calls to special services. – PTI
