LAMKA, Aug 16: As elsewhere in the country, the Independence Day was celebrated in Churachandpur district at the Lamka Public ground in an impressive manner. This was particularly due to the presence of Jacintha Lazarus, IAS, at the helm of affairs in Churachanpur as DC.
Never before was such a huge turn out of public seen on the day along with a large number of March past contingents from as many as 44 schools in the town.
Breaking all previous records in which roughly 20 to 24 contingents took part in the function marking the Independence Day celebration at the Public ground, this year saw the participation of many private schools, which was unlike past years. The number of contingents which rose to a high of 44 could be the largest in the district level celebrations.
The manner of conduct of the cultural items also saw a change this year as instead of the various tribes performing their items when their turn came, this time around they were made to take positions in a line simultaneously tribe wise. This made the cultural programme more colorful, saved a lot of time and was pleasing to the eyes apart from being impressive and novel.
The Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur took the salute while the parade was commanded by Lhunkhomang, the SDPO of the district. Ebenezer Academy a private mission school was adjudged the best among the performing school contingents in the march past and were given the first prize in the boys contingent category, while JNV and St Paul’s School were second and third respectively in the same category.
In the girls contingent category, Ebenezer Academy, Don Bosco and St Paul’s stood first, second and third respectively in the march past. Many other awards were also given to various district level officials on the occasion.
The DC in her speeche pointed out many of the works taken up under the various schemes of the government while congratulating the recently elected MDC’s quoting MK Gandhi who said “Development lies in the grassroots”.
She also mentioned the recently inaugurated government projects in the district and the many foundation stones which had been laid for some other projects.
