Commonwealth Games baton to pass through state today

IMPHAL, Jul 26: The Queen’s Baton Relay of the Commonwealth Games, 2010 will be touching down at Tulihal Airport tomorrow at 8:40 am for the Manipur leg of the relay. Officials of the Youth Affairs and Sports department will receive the Baton Relay, on its arrival from Dimapur tomorrow by an Indian Airlines flight.

However, a reception ceremony which will commence at 1:45 pm has been organized at the Kangla Uttra Gate, where the baton will be received by the YAS minister, N Biren Singh from the QBR officials and to be displayed on the stage.

The state chief minister, O Ibobi Singh and YAS minister, N Biren Singh will attend the reception ceremony as the chief guest and president respectively. The welcome address of the reception ceremony will be given by the Commissioner, YAS and the Queen’s baton will be handed over to the chief minister of the state by the YAS minister who in turn will hand it over to the first Olympian of the state during the reception ceremony.

The chief minister will flag off the relay from Kangla at 2:30 pm and after touching various locations of the capital city will be brought to Khuman Lampak, Indoor Stadium after making a journey of 13 kms in the state.

A cultural programme has also been organized at the Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak to celebrate the arrival of the baton after the relay, where the last bearer of the baton will hand it over to the YAS minister who will hand it over to the president, MOA.

The baton will be handed over to the QBR officials by the president, MOA after the presentation of gifts to the QBR officials.

A state dinner has also been organized at the 1st Manipur Rifles Banquet hall on July 28, which will be followed by tree plantation by forest department at Khongampat. The QBR officials will be leaving the state by another Indian Airlines flight for Aizawl the next day for the Mizoram leg of the Baton Relay.

In the meantime, some of the best sports personalities of the state will be missing from the state leg of the Baton Relay. Former Olympian Ksh Thoiba and emerging Olympian Archer of the state Bombayla will be missing from the relay.
