Hill districts face 24-hr ‘total’ bandh

Imphal, June 12: Naga organisations in Manipur have called a 24-hour “total bandh” in the five hill districts from midnight tomorrow, demanding that the declaration of Naga leaders Samson Remei and David Choro as “wanted”, be withdrawn. Remei is
the president of the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of the Nagas
in Manipur, and Choro that of the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur, (ANSAM).

The bandh was called after a five-day ultimatum by the Naga organisations, led by the UNC, to chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh to withdraw the “wanted” tag ended today. The bandh has been called on two other demands — withdrawal of all state forces and lifting of prohibitory orders under Section 144 from all Naga-inhabited areas in Manipur. The bandh would be followed by a series of democratic agitations in support of the three demands, the statement said.
