‘No new AIR station for NE under 11th Plan’

New Delhi, April 26, 2010: In the 11th plan, there is no proposal to set up new All India Radio (AIR) stations in the North East including other parts of the country, said Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr S Jagathrakshakan in reply to a question raised by AGP MP Briendra Prasad Baishya.
The Union Minister further informed the Rajya Sabha that 1 KW FM Relay centres at 19 places, 100 numbers of 100 watt relay Transmitters and six KM FM stations at Longtherai (Tripura) in the Northeast are under construction under the 10th plan.


Dr S Jagathrakshakan also said that power of some of the existing transmitters in the NER including Guwahati is being increased and additional FM transmitters are also being installed at some of the existing AIR stations including Dibrugarh and Tezpur in the 11th Plan.
As regards Doordarshan, it is mentioned that 132 TV transmitters of varying power are currently functioning in NER and that new transmitters for expansion of terrestrial coverage are now not envisaged, he said. However, projects to upgrade the existing HPT (1KW) at Kokrajhar to 10 KW HPT with new 150 M tower, in permanent set up, is under implementation, he added.
The Minister also told the Lok Sabha about the areas uncovered by terrestrial transmission including NER along with the rest of the country and said these areas have been provided with multi channel TV coverage through Doordarshan free to air DTH service “DD Direct Plus.”
