In a letter to Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily, MPP president Nimaichand Luwang said, “we want a separate high court for our state.” A copy of the letter issued to the media further cited that Manipur merged with India in 1949 as a union territory and it had then a judicial commissioner’s court, which is equivalent to the high court. The judicial commissioner’s court was abolished when Manipur attained statehood in 1972, the letter said adding that Manipur has been under the jurisdiction of Guwahati high court for several years for any court cases.
Meanwhile, two suspected militants kidnapped the section officer of the state fisheries department from his office at Thangmeiband Watham Leirak, Imphal around 11.20 am today. Suspected militants also hurled a grenade at an official quarter of the Imphal West Block Development Officer (BDO), Keisham Rajendro situated nearby the fisheries department minutes ahead of kidnapping the section officer (SO) identified as Veda Prakash, a non-Manipuri officer.
According to official sources, the SO was called out from the office on the pretext of having talk on certain matter by the two unknown youths who came in an auto-rickshaw. They forcibly stepped him into the auto and left the place.
In another unrelated incident, the drivers of two freight trucks who were kidnapped by suspected militants yesterday had been released unharmed.
