Tribal students concern over Manipur census operations

Imphal, October 2 (NNN): The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM), has expressed ‘deep concern’ over Manipur State Government’s handling of census operation in the hill districts of Manipur. It condemned the Government and warned against unfavorable fallout if the demands of ATSUM are not heeded by the Government. “Overlapping, alteration, modification and cancellation of the census of the tribal areas in the five hill districts are condemned in the strongest term,” said ATSUM.

It went on to suggest that if the Government finds any loopholes in the operation, ‘correction and verification’ be effected at the actual site of the census and not at Imphal away from ground zero. Given that a second round of the census operation is still pending ‘with more specification and specialization methods’, ATSUM said that the Government should not go ‘hysteric’ prematurely over the growth rate of the tribals. It asked the State Government to revert back the alleged 10% abnormal growth of the census and a clarification be made to the effect.

The tribal students’ body warns that any ‘untoward consequences’ on the event of apathy against its demand, the Government will be held responsible. Making a scathing attack on the State Government over alleged denial of employment opportunity to the tribals, ATSUM appeals that Manipur Reservation of Vacancies in Post and Services (SC and ST) Act 2007 be implemented without further delay. Citing alleged Schedule Tribe posts and promotions being deprived in institutions of repute like JNIMS, Home, Assembly Secretariat, PHED, RD department, Fire Service, the tribal students drew the attention of the Government, failing to address ‘this final appeal’, an agitation will be launched, it further warned.
