Manipur to launch vaccination programme | M Saheiphai village chief shot dead by unknown gunmen

Imphal,Oct 23 – A massive Japanese Encephalitis vaccination programme will be formally launched in five Manipur district from Monday with the active involvement of nearly 10,000 government employees.

The programme which would be taken up in five districts of Imphal West and East, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Chandel, will target 5,92,196 children of one to 15 years by opening 2,053 vaccination booths.

State’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, Pheiroijam Parijat informed this while speaking to press persons in here on Friday. Japanese Encephalitis VaccinationProgramme , which was deferred from its earlier schedule of October 12 due to none arrival of auto disabled syringes imported from a foreign country, will be launched on October 25.

Ph Parijat said that the Government is to take up the programme considering the prevalence of the dreaded disease in the State.

The five districts of Manipur were among 109 districts in the country selected for the mass vaccination programme, the Minister said.

The Centrally sponsored programme is to be taken up in the State by the Family Welfare department in collaboration with National Rural Health Mission. The programme has been successfully implemented in 30 districts of the country, Parijat said.

A total of 217 medical officers, 678 ANM, 3,646 Anganwadi workers, 2,713 ASHA workers, 1,815 teachers, 93 supervisors and 344 staff nurses will be engaged in the programme.

Additonal director of Social Welfare department, Dr Wahengbam Gulapi, who also attended a press briefing, said the children will be vaccinated with SA14-14-2. The vaccine cannot be administered to children infected with HIV/AIDS. Children with liver and kidney cases, allergic children and those suffering from fever will also be exempted from vaccination, he added.

It may be mentioned here that around 34 persons were officially reported dead due to the syndrome of Japanese Encephalitis within July. - AT
M Saheiphai village chief shot dead by unknown gunmen
Imphal, Oct 23: Village chief of M Saheiphai, Sangaikot was shot death by armed miscreants inside his own residential compound early morning today.

The deceased village chief is identified as one Paokhothang Haokip, 58, son of late Jamkhai.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 5:30 am today when some three unknown assailants intruded into Paokhopmang’s residence and fired at him from a close range.

The victim sustained bullet injury at his back and died at the spot.

Churachandpur police station has registered a case in connection with the killing of the village chief.

However, at the time of filing this report there has been no report of any arrest in connection with the killing nor clarification from any underground group on the reason for killing the village chief.

In the meantime, the Kuki Chiefs’ Association (KCA), Chandel called an emergency meeting today at the residence of TT Haokip, vice president KCA, Chandel and condemned the killing of Paokhothang Haokip, S/o (L) Jamkhokhai Haokip, chief of Saheipai village on October 22.

According to the release, Paokhothang Haokip was shot dead at point blank range while he was having beetle-nut at a shop just outside his house late evening. The KCA in the release has appealed to all organization or individuals involved in such uncivilized act to claim the responsibility behind the murder at the earliest and shares the grief and pain with the bereaved family.

Trial Black Gram cultivation in CCPur turn out successful
Imphal, Oct 23: Black gram (locally known as Sagol Hawai amuba) T-9 variety has been successfully harvested for the first time at Sumchinvum village in Churachandpur district.

Farming of the Black Gram at Sumchinvum village was undertaken under the supervision and guidance of the monitoring and expert committee of the state agriculture department for the first time this year and it turned out to be a success.

Sumchinvum village was declared a model seed village for Black Gram by the state agriculture department few months back.

Besides Churachandpur district, the model seed village for Black Gram was also undertaken in two other districts that is Ukhrul, Senapati. State agriculture department is targeting to produce 800kgs of Black Gram at an area of ten hector.
The deputy director agriculture and soil chemist, Ph Rajendra disclosed this to reporters today during the successful harvest conducted at Sumchinvum model seed Village under Singhat sub-division.

G Samu Kabui, deputy director planning, of the agriculture department asserted that the department has started undertaking farming of various crops in the hill district of Manipur as a part of the modernization of Jhum Cultivation Plan Policy adding in view of the approaching Rabi season the department of agriculture is planning to pursue Rabi cropping in an area of 80,000 hector in five hill districts depending on Ph values.

Commissioner of agriculture Letkhogin Haokip, who was also present at today’s Black Gram harvest function said the initiative taken by department will to some extend enhance the economic status of the hill people who are basically a hand to mouth cultivators.

The successful harvest of Black Gram is a good indication for the farmers who can, during the off seasons, cultivate it and generate incomes. Moreover the state government has introduce a policy for purchasing Black Gram at the rate of Rs 80 per kilogram and subsequently the purchased crop will in turn distributed to the farmers during off seasons. - IFP
