Ministers', MLAs' pay likely to be hiked triple times

Imphal, July 28: Salaries and allowances of the Chief Minister, the Ministers and the MLAs of Manipur Legislative Assembly will be hiked triple times to that of existing salaries if the two bills introduced in the House seeking amendment to the Acts related to the matters is passed.


The state Assembly will discuss tomorrow the two bills introduced in the House on Monday last seeking amendment to the Salaries and Allowances of Ministers (Manipur) Act, 1972 and Salaries and Allowances of Members of the Legislative Assembly (Manipur) Act, 1972 along with other bills as per business scheduled by the Assembly Secretariat.

The monthly salary of the Chief Minister will be increased to Rs 23,000 from the existing Rs 6,000 and that of ministers and Deputy Chief Minister (if any) will be increased from the existing scale of Rs 5,000 to Rs 22,000 a month while from Rs 4,800 to Rs 21,000 for that of Ministers of state, once the bills are passed in the House and enacted as Act.

In addition to the salary, the Chief Minister will be paid a daily allowance of Rs 1,500 within the state and Rs 2,500 outside the state while the Cabinet Minister Rs 1,400 within the state and Rs 2,400 outside the state and Minister of State will enjoy a sum of Rs 1,375 within the state and Rs 2,300 outside the state.

Currently, the Chief Minister is enjoying an allowance of Rs 3,000 per month while the Cabinet Minister enjoys Rs 2,000 per month.

The entertainment allowance of Chief Minister and Cabinet Ministers, which are Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,500 per month respectively will also be revised at Rs 12,000 and Rs 11,000 per month respectively.

The salary of an MLA per month will also be revised at Rs 18,500 from the existing rate of Rs 6,750 and the daily allowance from Rs 350 to Rs 700 (within the state) and from Rs 700 to Rs 1,500 (outside the state).

The existing constituency, contingency, secretariat and entertainment allowances per month for each Member which are Rs 5,250, Rs 4,500 and Rs 2,250 respectively will be increased to Rs 12,000, Rs 8,000 and Rs 15,000. This will be in addition to the salaries and allowances of the members.

The bills with regard to the revision of salaries and allowances of the Chief Minister and the Ministers and the MLAs were introduced in the House by the Chief Minister, who also looks after the Finance portfolio.

The bills also propose to enhance the pension of ex-members, yearly increment after completion of five years’ term per annum of an ex-member and to enhance the family pension rate.
