Mizoram to resettle Reangs

- Centre’s nudge helps migrants get new homes in Mamit district
Silchar, April 30: The Mizoram government has agreed to resettle a fresh batch of Reang (also known as Bru) migrants in their original homes in Mamit district.
The migrants, numbering nearly 2,000 and drawn from 480 families, were forced to flee their homes in the villages of West Bunghmun, New Eden, Tumpanglui, West Sarali, Kolalian, Bajrungpa and Damdiai.
The exodus came in the wake of tension after a group of Reangs lynched a Mizo youth at Buangthuam hamlet in the district on November 13.

While some fled to Tripura, others flocked to the Reang villages along the state’s border where improvised shelters made of bamboo and thatch had been set up at community camps.
Official sources in Aizawl said the government agreed to take them back after the Centre expressed concern over the exodus.
Mizoram’s commissioner and secretary in the home department, Lalmal, along with senior officials met deputy commissioner Zothankhuma and superintendent of police Dingluaia at Mamit town yesterday to chart out a blueprint for the repatriation of the Reangs.
He said they set a deadline of May 15 to complete the phase-wise repatriation of the refugees.
Lalmalsawma said the state government was trying to comply with the Union home ministry’s request to ensure the return of the Reang refugees by that date.
He added that the repatriated families would be provided with a rehabilitation package and rations in the initial days of their resettlement.
The rehabilitation package is being formulated, official sources said.
However, there is uncertainty over the repatriation of the 37,000 Reang migrants who were forced to flee to Tripura following the riots between the Mizos and Reangs in November 1997.
These refugees have been living in six camps in Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura adjoining Mizoram.
Their repatriation has hit a dead end, as there are differences of opinion between the Bru refugees and state government.
While the Mizoram government has estimated that there are only 16,000 Reangs who are the genuine residents of Mizoram, the migrant leaders have disputed this claim and demanded that the state government accept all the refugees.
