Police rescue DDK team from IM cadres at Chandel

Imphal, October 11: About ten persons who claimed themselves to be cadres of NSCN-IM snatched and destroyed the video camera belonging to the news unit of Doordarshan Kendra (DDK), Imphal from a team of two persons of the news unit at about 11.30 am today at Chandel.

Reports received from DDK, Imphal alleged that the incident happened when a team of two persons went to Chandel district head quarter for coverage of the DPC of teachers of Autonomous District Council (ADC).

While cameraman of the news unit, Nongmeikappam Budha and a van driver were taking video coverage of the DPC being conducted at Maha Union Government High School at Chandel, about 10 persons, who claimed themselves to be cadres of NSCN-IM, came and abducted them.

The NSCN-IM cadres snatched the mini DVD of Sony comapny from Nongmeikappam Budha and reportedly threw it down on the ground with force. They also stamped on the camera and broke it into pieces.

They also asked the two why they were taking video coverage of the DPC without their permission, the reports said. A person who claimed to be the Kilonser of NSCN-IM conveyed the news of the incident to DDK Imphal and informed that until and unless news editor Robert J Baite himselve comes to the place, the two abducted persons will not be released.

Immediately, the incident was reported to SP, Chandel district police. At once, police swung into action and launched a rescue operation. After searching for the abducted TV crew, police found and rescued them from the abductors.

Later, Chandel police escorted them upto Thoubal. DDK Imphal has formaly lodged a complaint with the Chandel police station, police said.
