NESO demands PM to protect NE women in Delhi

Guwahati: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has called upon the MPs from the region to raise their voices in protest the rising incidents of crime against the North East students, particularly women in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) and asked the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to intervene to protect NE students.

"The Prime Minister in a letter dated November 12, 2009 had assured the NESO to take steps to provide adequate physical security to North East students, particularly women, in the national capital. Despite the assurance the atrocities on NE students continue in Delhi and NCR. We, therefore, demand that Dr Singh who is a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, must keep his promise to secure life of NE students in the national capital," said Dr Samujjal Bhattacharrya, chairman of the NESO.

The executive body meeting of the NESO which was held here on Thursday, resolved to send a delegation to New Delhi in later part of January to take up the issue of security of NE students with concerned authorities and central government.

The NESO criticized MPs from the North East for failing to respond adequately to the issue of NE students’ security in national capital.

It called upon all the chief ministers of Northeastern states to mount pressure on the Central government to take proper steps to prevent incidences of crime against NE students, women in Delhi and NCR.

NESO will observe December 15 as protest day in the region on the crimes committed against people from North East in Delhi and NCR and will send memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister demanding immediate steps.
