IMPHAL, Nov 16: MLA Doukhomang Khongsai has provided relief aids among the flood affected people and students of Saikul Sub-division in Senapati district.
Apart from the death of a 7-year old boy, around 130 houses and over 250 acres of agricultural land have been destroyed in one of the most devastating flood that hit Saikul area on October 8 last.
Students of staying in the boarding of a school called Children Training Academy have to be evacuated by the 36 Assam Rifles and local people when the building was flooded while the students are fast sleep at night. A bridge had also been swept away in the swirling flood water.
The MLA distributed the relief aids during a function organised by Kuki Inpi Manipur, Saikul Areas at its office today. SDO Saikul L Nandakumar, his subordinate staff, Khullakpas of various villages, public leaders and students were also present at the occasion.
The MLA presented blankets and stationery items among the student boarders of the affected school. Moreover, he distributed rice and cash incentives among the flood affected families.
The MLA also donated Rs 10,000 to the authorities of Children Training Academy.
In the flood, one 7-year old boy Lamginlen Kipgen had been swept in the strong current of Thoubal river and his body could not be found.
To the bereaved family members of 7-year old boy Lamginlen Kipgen of Tusam village, whose body has not been found after being swept away in the strong current of the flooded Thoubal river, the SDO handed over Rs 5000.
Speaking at the occasion, MLA Doukhomang Khongsai said that though the recent flood devastated most part of valley area, it also had its impact in Saikul area. Flooding of the building while the student boarders were fast asleep was indeed a great danger. But the timely intervention of Kuki Inpi, KSO, public and Assam Rifles managed to save the children.
Admitting that the relief aids should have been provided among the flood affected people immediately, the MLA explained that some time had been taken in trying to get the relief items being released.
Relief aids would also be provided to those who have been indirectly affected by the flood in due course of time, he assured.
