CBI chargesheet 9 Manipur cops

IMPHAL, Sept 10: Nine Manipur police commandos including two inspectors were issued arrest warrants Friday by Imphal West chief judicial magistrate (CJM) in connection with the “fake encounter” case for allegedly killing a former militant and a pregnant woman in Imphal city on July 23 last year. The CBI in a chargesheet submitted to CJM accused nine policemen under Section 34, Sections 302, 218, 203 of the IPC and also under substantive offences in connection with the case registered in the Imphal City Police.
The two inspectors, Inspector Yumnam Munal who was the Investigative Officer (IO) of the case and Inspector Debendra, OC of the then Imphal City police were accused for tampering evidences. CBI in the chargesheet alleged that Munal who was the IO of the case in collusion with three personnel H Devendra, Herojit and N Noyaima showed mediapersons and public a 9 mm pistol Mauser Werke claimed to have been recovered from the deceased. But in the seizure memo, it was recorded as Tangfoglio pistol. While the CBI alleged, Constable Th Herojit shot dead Chungkham Sanjit following an order from Debendra. Sanjit was dragged inside the ‘Star Room’ of Social Time Emporium at BT Road by Debendro, Herojit, Toyaima, Bioykumar, Jagat, Md Imran Khan, Kishore and Makon Chothe and was shot dead CBI mentioned in the chargesheet. But while deposing before the CBI, Herojit had said that Sanjit was killed in an encounter that ensued at the place. It was on the basis of a writ petition filed by Chunkham Taratombi Devi, mother of the deceased that the Gauhati High Court directed the CBI to carry out an investigation.
