Tribal youth council to oppose ADC polls

IMPHAL, Apr 22: The Tribal Youth Council, Manipur (TYCM) has resolved to oppose holding of election to the ADC, which have been tentatively announced by the state government. A release of the tribal youth body said an emergency meeting of the TYCM held on April 21 at its office resolve to oppose election of the ADC scheduled during May.
Demanding review of the Third Amendment to the Manipur Hill Areas Council Act 2008, without which, the council said the ADC elections in the hill districts of Manipur would amount to discrimination against the poor people living in the hill districts.
The council also extended support to the tribal frontal organizations which are presently demanding a review of the third amendment to the controversial Act.
Asking state government not to unwittingly stoke the fire of communalism, which was once named as the greatest danger for India by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the TYCM has asked for discretion in the matter, while reminding the government that the tribals had been boycotting the ADC elections since 1987 under the principle of ‘No Sixth Schedule, no Election’.
Stating that the TYCM would tie up with other tribal organizations of Manipur to unanimously fight for their Rights in regard to the amendment Act, the council has asked the state government not to delay review of the Act. It also asked state government to bring a negotiated settlement on the issue before it takes its ugly turn.
