IMPHAL, April 22: The Bangladesh High Commissioner whose reason for visiting the state is known only to some close quarters in the government, is a sign of the alarm the proposed dam has raised in Manipur, Assam and even for a majority of the population in Bangladesh a joint release of environment groups, CCDD, COLNR and ACTIP said.
The protests against the construction of Tipaimukh Dam has reached high pitch in all the areas where the rivers flows, whether in Manipur or in Assam or in Bangladesh it said. They have been joined by river activist, academics, environmental action organization etc. And there are valid and irrefutable reasons for their insistence to stop the dam, the release added.
The CCDD, COLNR and ACTIP which have been spearheading the movement against the dam in Manipur noted with concern the clandestine visit of the Bangladesh High Commissioner to India visiting the state of Manipur to discuss the Tipaimukh dam, it said.
It may be noted that one of the key reason for resisting the dam is the way government plans this dams in very secretive ways, the release said.
As noted in a recent rally protest in Silchar, Assam and in Ukhrul, Manipur, any effort to bypass the people will result in massive protests in all upstream and downstream regions including in neighboring Bangladesh, it said.
“We advise the High Commission as well as the government of Manipur not to indulge in any effort to wake up the dam which was closed down” it said.
