Imphal, April 20: A minor boy was killed and his pregnant mother seriously injured when their mud house collapsed after a severe hailstorm lashed Keirenphabi Mayai Leikai, along with other areas under Kumbi Assembly constituency of Bishnupur district this morning.
Police said five-year-old Bidhyashore Singh tried to get out of the mud house but was buried under the debris as the structure collapsed under the impact of the storm.
Bidhyashore was a nursery student at Children Model Academy, Keirenphabi Maya Leikai. His mother, Asha Devi, 25,
suffered severe injuries but was fortunate to have survived after she was pulled out from under the debris.
Her husband, Tongbram Sanayaima Singh, 30, who was the first to run out of the house when the storm broke out, escaped unhurt.
Asha Devi was later admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences here. Doctors at the hospital said her condition was serious.
Police said the hailstorm swept away many parts of Kumbi Assembly constituency around 10 this morning. People started running out of their homes and several huts started caving in after the roofs were blown away.
Nearly 700 houses were damaged and over 1,500 villagers rendered homeless. Several displaced persons were sheltered at the house of local MLA N. Mangi Singh at Kumbi Bazar.
Two students also sustained injuries in the Assembly constituency.
Wahengbam Nganthoi Devi, 8, sustained injuries on the head when a piece of iron, apparently blown around by the storm, hit her while she tried to run out of Y.P. English School at Setupur village. A Class I student, Wahengbam was treated at a nearby Assam Rifles post.
Naorem Surchandra Singh, also a Class I student, was injured after he accidentally touched a snapped electric wire outside Sanatombi Oriental English School at Eshing Chaiba village in the constituency.
