Calls for 12 hours bandh on April 6

Dimapur, April 1 (MExN): Naga organizations from the south today rejected the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act 1971 and in protest a 12-hour bandh has been called for April 6 in the hill areas. The bandh is to start from 6:00am and till 6:00pm. A meeting of the Naga frontal organizations was held in Tahamzam April 1 under the aegis of the United Naga Council. The organizations deliberated on the current status of imposed legislations with special reference to the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act 1971 (amended in 2008). The Act was rejected in outright by the organizations.
The meeting was attended by Naga Women’s Union of Manipur, All Naga Students’ Association of Manipur; Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights, Naga Peoples’ Organization of Senapati; Zeliangrong Interim Body and the Tangkhul Naga Long.
The organizations said the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act 1971 (Amended Act 2008) should be rejected in its present form and content.
The Act does not protect and safeguard the rights of the people, the organizations stated. It was decided that the Hill Areas Committee would be urged to immediately defer the enforcement of the Act. Elected representatives will also be urged to review the Act, the organizations said.
The organizations decided to “observe solidarity rejection” of the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act 1971 in different regional headquarters on April 5. The day after, will be the bandh. Respective tribal hohos are entrusted to take necessary steps “to enforce the rejection of the aforesaid Act in their own jurisdiction.”
