Mixed response to Bharat bandh in NE

AGARTALA, April 27 – Normal life was today hit in Tripura, Arunachal and Manipur during the 12-hour nation-wide strike called by the Left and the non-BJP opposition parties to protest Centre’s alleged “failure” to check price rise. However, there was no response to the bandh in Meghalaya and Mizoram.

Shops and markets were closed and vehicles were off the road in the State capital and across the State but there was no report of any untoward incident, official sources said.

Schools, colleges, banks and financial institutions remained closed and no attendance was registered in the Civil Secretariat here, the sources said.Train and air service were also hit.

Itanagar:Normal life was paralysed today in Arunachal Pradesh with vehicular traffic remaining off the roads during the 12-hour Bharat bandh.

Banks and Central Government offices, post offices and BSNL offices, shops and markets and educational institutions remained closed.

State Transport department office here said not a single bus plied today.

Imphal: The 12-hour bandh today evoked partial response in Manipur. Official sources said most of the markets in the State remained closed and transport services between Imphal and interior district headquarters were suspended.

Schools and colleges were, however, open and functioning was normal in the airport.

Work in government offices were also affected but that was due to the ongoing strike by the employees since January 16 demanding full implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, sources said.

Bus services between Manipur and neighbouring States were also cancelled due to the bandh and also due to road blockade by some organisations opposing the proposal to hold elections to autonomous district councils in hill districts next month.

Aizawl: The bandh failed to evoke any response in Congress-ruled Mizoram.

Schools, colleges, offices remained open and vehicles plied normally on the roads. The markets, banks and other commercial establishments were open and attendance in government offices was normal.

Airport sources said flights coming from Kolkata and Guwahati could not reach as they could not fly from Kolkata and Guwahati.
