Curfew’ on non-Mizos after rape

Silchar, April 22: Tension gripped Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, after an NGO issued a “curfew” asking the non-Mizos residing in Aizawl and other important areas in the state to stay indoors for four days from yesterday.
This diktat by the Young Mizo Association (YMA), termed “curfew sermon”, came in the wake of the alleged rape of a 13-year-old Mizo girl at Khatla near the central business hub of Aizawl by a non-Mizo youth named Laxman.
Police today said the incident occurred on Tuesday night.
A police source said after the culprit was identified, the investigating team picked up the person who had allegedly raped the girl. He is said to be a Hindi-speaking youth, who recently moved to Aizawl to earn his livelihood as a cobbler.
The director-general of Mizoram police, Lalrokhuma Pachuau, today said even as the racial tension was brewing in the wake of the “curfew” order, no untoward incident was reported so far from anywhere in the state.
The DGP said arrange-ments were put in place to escort the non-Mizo school students in Aizawl in cars under the supervision of police for allowing them to appear for the joint entrance examination at the centres in the city.
Pachuau said curfew is expected to be on till 24 April.
The Silchar Truck Owners’ Association has expressed concern over the escalation of the racial tension in Mizoram following the rape of the Mizo girl and asked the government there to ensure peace and normality in the state.
Nearly, 150 trucks from Cachar district in Assam travel to Aizawl everyday carrying essential items.
