Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday claimed that he had first demanded right to education for children, which has come into force in the country, way back in 1971 in his maiden speech as a parliamentarian.
Terming the legislation as "revolutionary", Gogoi told a press conference here, that way back in 1971 in his first speech in Lok Sabha he had demanded that children should be given fundamental right to education, food and health.
Hoping that similar laws will be enacted in case of food and health for children, the chief minister said an amount of Rs 4000 crore will be spent in the next five years to build up infrastructure for providing free elementary education to children in the age group of six to 14 years.
"This will be a massive work and the government intends to involved government at all levels, panchayats, NGOs, civil society and the parents of the children as well," Gogoi said. (PTI)
