ANSAM Blockade begins

Imphal, April 12: Some 20 goods laden vehicles stranded at Mao Gate in the Nagaland-Manipur border due to All Naga Students’ Association (ANSAM)’s sponsored economic blockade in Manipur were being escorted towards Imphal on Monday evening by the Manipur Rifles personnel.

The ANSAM’s 6-day economic blockade along the two national highways and in all the state highways in the state began since last midnight. No untoward incidents were reported from any part of the two national highways till the filing of this story.
On the first day of the economic blockade today in both the life-lines of Manipur, atleast 20 vehicles including 10 trucks loaded with essential commodities, one oil tanker and a Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) carrier stranded since last night at Mao gate were escorted by the MR personnel to Imphal.

The economic blockade is being called by the ANSAM against the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council-3rd Amendment Act 2008.
The Naga students' body has also warned the Manipur government from holding the ADCs elections under the said Act and not to conduct the forthcoming polls in the absence of people’s interest and sentiment.

Mention may be made that frontal Naga organizations and other tribal bodies have been voicing their concerns over the ADC third amendment Act, 2008 and the forthcoming polls under the same Act.

In the meant time, the Manipur Tribal Joint Action Committee Against Elections Under Unwanted District Council Act has called a separate 24 hour ‘total bandh in all the tribal inhabited districts of Manipur’ starting from Monday midnight.
