AGARTALA, April 20 – The Amway India Enterprises Pvt Ltd has recorded a robust growth of 37 per cent in Northeastern region during the year 2009 in spite of the economic meltdown.
In Tripura, the company has recorded a growth of 37 per cent with Rs 180 lakh against a turnover of Rs 131 lakh in the corresponding period in 2009.
Speaking at a press conference here yesterday, Diptarang Bhattacharjee, vice president of the company, Eastern region, said the North East contributes a sizable chunk of the turnover for the region with high potential locations including Manipur and Upper Assam.
“The total turnover of the company in the Northeastern region is Rs 88 crore during the year and growth rate is 37 per cent”, he said adding that the company had paid Rs 10 crore as sales tax.
Amway operates in ten locations in the region – Guwahati, Silchar, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Shillong, Imphal, Kohima, Dimapur, Agartala and Aizwal. “To further drive the business, we are intensifying our focus on the productivity, expansion and extensive training of distributors”, he said.
“The Eastern region shows the highest potential for future growth propelled by a rise in entrepreneurial activity. A survey conducted by Ermst & Young on Indian selling industry echoes the potential of health, household and personal care as the predominant categories in this region”, he pointed out.
Sarbani Bhattacharya, Associate Manager (corporate communications) highlighted the Amway’s commitment towards the society.
In Tripura, water purifier and musical instruments were provided to visually challenged children at Nasrsingarh last year and the project will continue this year too, she said. “In fact, we lend a helping hand on need basis. In Guwahati, the Amway received a project proposal to set up a computer centre for visually challenged children and it is under consideration” , she added.
