SHILLONG, April 16 – Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang whose ouster is being demanded by Congress dissidents, today rushed to New Delhi for the third time within a month, to meet senior AICC leaders.
AICC, which wants Lapang to continue to head the State, was earlier learnt to have given him more time to garner majority support in theCongress Legislature Party (CLP) following the revolt by the dissident group to oust him.
Lapang left Shillong for the national capital this morning, party sources said.
The Chief Minister, who had returned from a week-long visit to New Delhi on Tuesday night, had met Governor R S Mooshahary on Wednesday. Asked if there could be a leadership change in the State, Lapang had said, “Congress president Sonia Gandhi will decide it.”
Names of Deputy Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and Speaker Charles Pyngrope are doing the rounds for the post of Chief Minister if Lapang fails to muster majority.
Pradesh Congress president Friday Lyngdoh is camping in New Delhi and had a series of meetings with senior AICC leaders, including Congress chief Sonia Gandhi since Wednesday.
Lyngdoh is scheduled to meet Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel this evening.
Fourteen MLAs of the total 28 in Congress had on April 7 faxed a letter to AICC president Sonia Gandhi seeking Lapang’s ouster, claiming that he has “lost majority” in the CLP.
The rebels, including senior leaders like Sayeedullah Nongrum, H D R Lyngdoh, Rowell Lyngdoh, A L Hek, F W Momin and Augustine Marak, are disgruntled over not being included in the Ministry.
There are only six Congress MLAs of the 28 in Lapang’s Ministry.
The current ruling Congress alliance, sworn-in last year after the fall of the NCP-led government, enjoys the support of 44 legislators. – PTI
