Two shot dead in Manipur

Imphal, March 19: A suspected militant was killed in an encounter and a former rebel shot dead by unidentified persons in two separate incidents in Manipur last night.

Unknown gunmen shot dead N. Premjit, 30, said to be a former cadre of the Peoples Liberation Army, at Khangakcham Thong under Yairipok police station of Thoubal district.

Police said Premjit was returning home at 9pm after visiting a friend staying nearby when unknown persons waylaid him and fired at him, killing him on the spot. No one has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Elsewhere at Kongba Irong in Imphal East district, the Assam Rifles shot dead a suspected militant in an encounter at 11.30pm. The troops recovered a .32 pistol with three live rounds and a Chinese hand grenade on the slain man whose identity is yet to be ascertained.

Likram Thoi, alias Thouyangba, 19, a cadre of the Peoples Liberation Army who was injured in an encounter with the security forces at Old Tollen of Chandel district on Wednesday, was arrested yesterday.

In the encounter, two PLA cadres were killed. The police said the injured cadre was arrested from a house at Heirok in Thoubal district. Interrogation of the arrested cadre led to the recovery of an AK-56 rifle, 50 live rounds, one Chinese hand grenade, two rocket-propelled shells and a broken butt of an AK-56 rifle.

The police said the PLA cadre was trained in Myanmar for 45 days after he joined the outfit in 2007.
