MU students shut shutters to protest black-out, water scarcity.
IMPHAL, Mar 14 : Infu-riated over the failure of Ma- nipur University authority to provide electricity and potable water since the past one week even after stu-dents have paid electricity and water taxes, hostellers of MU Men’s Hostel number 2 and 3 made bonfires of the beds and chairs allotted to the two hostels.
Together with the of burning beds and chairs after taking them out from numerous rooms of the two hostel blocks, a tense situation was building up among the students.
However, timely intervention by security person- nel stationed in the university succeeded in mollifying the agitated hostellers.
The tense situation subsided following an under- standing that the students should talk to the Registrar at 10 am tomorrow to highlight their grievances.
According to the hostellers, Manipur University was not getting regular power supply due to non-payment of tax.
Though Manipur University has its own gene- rators, the hostellers were deprived of regular power supply thereby affecting their study schedules.
Power supply to the two hostel blocks were completely disrupted from 9 am today.
After the students lod-ged a complaint to authorities at A-Block, power supply was restored at 6 pm.
But the power received at the two hostels were quite inadequate as only a single tube in the large mess room could be lit. It could not run computer sets.
With most of the examinations starting from May, it is time for exhaustive reading. But electricity is not available in the two hostels although street lamps and other outdoor lightings are put on wastefully.
As there was no electricity, electric power-operated water filters were also not working. Under such circumstances, students were forced to fetch water from hostel no. 1.
Students were not even taking bath as there was no water in toilets/bath-rooms.
Unable to bear such atrocious treatment, students took out beds and chairs in the open and set them afire in protest, they conveyed.
