Deora announces Rs 9 crore reward for Indian CWG medalists

New Delhi, Oct 14 (PTI) Oil Minister Murli Deora today said a reward of about Rs 9 crore will be shared by the Indian athletes that secured a record haul of medals at the 19th Commonwealth Games that concluded here today. Congratulating the Indian players, Deora said: "Their excellent performance would motivate more youths taking to sports and make India a strong sporting nation in coming years.

" The Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB), whose patron is Deora, will give Rs 10 lakh to every gold medalist, Rs 7.5 lakh to every silver medalist and Rs 5 lakh to every bronze medalist, an official statement said. India won a record 38 gold, 27 silver and 35 bronze medals to emerge second in the medals tally behind Australia.

"For their stellar performance, the Indian medal winners will get a total prize money of about Rs 9 crore," the statement said. The PSPB promotes some of the leading sports personalities of the country like Ronjan Sodhi (Shooting); Saina Naiwal, Chetan Anand, Jwala Gutta and V Diju (Badminton); Sharad Kamal, Soumyadeep Roy, Poulami Ghatak, Subojit Saha and A Amal Raj (Table Tennis).

In addition, Harvant Kaur (Discuss), Om Prakash (Shotput), Sinimone Paulose (800 metres); Chitra, Mandeep, Jauna Murmur and Tiana (4 x 400) ; Jagsir Singh (Javelin) and Rohan Boppana (Tennis) are affiliated to the PSPB. Nearly 50 sports persons affiliated to the PSPB represented India at the Games held here from October 3-14. PTI
