Manipur Govt to hold dialogue with Kuki ultras

Imphal, Sept 26 : Manipur Government will ‘soon’ hold ‘political dialogue’ with Kuki militants who signed suspension of operation’ (SoO) agreement with the State Government and Centre two years ago.

Inaugurating a ‘designated camp’ of Kuki National Front (KNF), a militant outfit which is one of signatories of SoO agreement at Natheljang village in interior Senapati district yesterday, State Chief Secretary DS Poonia said that the time from which the dialogue would begin and the agenda to be discussed would be known after a tripartite meeting of representatives of the Centre, State Government and militant outfits on September 29.

Poonia who is also chairman of the joint monitoring group (JMG) of SoO agreement parties said demands of the militant outfits would be discussed during the political dialogue.

Under the SoO agreement, State and Central forces would stop operating against ultras of about 18 Kuki militant outfits which signed the agreement in 2008, official sources said.

The main function of the JMG was to check the activities of the Kuki militants and prevent violation of the ground rules by these militants. The proposed tripartite talks would also discuss the infrastructural development to improve the condition of the designated camps, the sources said.

The government has so far set up ten ‘designated camps’ of Kuki militants at different places where these militants are lodged, the sources said.

The main demand of different Kuki militant outfits was the formation of a ‘Kuki Land’ by disintegrating Manipur which has a total area of about 22,327 sq km, the sources said. – PTI
