Merit scholarships: Thanks to OIL

A student recieves an award from Prof. Binay Kumar.
What had started with a modest amount of Rs 1.5 lakh distributed among 42 students in 1997, the OIL Merit Scholarships today accommodates 357 students with an amount of Rs 20 lakh, with the possibility of further increase in both the amount and number of scholarships in the coming years.

On May 7, this year’s award and scholarship programme was held at the Duliajan Club auditorium. It started with
a two-and-half-hour talk on Career Knowledge, Options and Guide and Hand Holding by Prof. Binay Kumar, former director of NHPC and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd and currently associated with Manushuo-Uthan, a well-known NGO.

Over 700 people, including scholars, parents, guardians and invited guests, attended the event.

A Sattriya dance performance by Binod Dutta, a young physically challenged student from Mrinaljyoti Rehabilitation Centre, Duliajan, was the highlight of the show.

The award function saw the faces of the recipients light up with joy, bringing a sense of fulfilment to all present, especially Oilindians.

The OIL Merit Scholarship scheme was instituted in 1997 to encourage meritorious students from OIL operational areas.

This scheme awards merit-based scholarships to students passing Class X and XII examinations under SEBA, AHSEC, CBSE and ICSE from various schools/colleges located in different parts of the operational area of OIL.
