Bandh cripples normalcy in Manipur Hills

IMPHAL, April 26 – Normal life in Manipur’s five hill districts – Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul – has been affected due to a 24-hour bandh called by Manipur Tribal Joint Action Committee Against Election Under Unwanted District Council Act.
Almost all the inter-district passenger bus services as well as other transport services remained off the road due to the bandh.

The committee called the bandh, which will end tonight, in protest against the State Government’s decision to go ahead with elections to the ADCs under the Manipur District Council Act of 2008.

Amidst the continuous protests, the State Government today issued the notification to hold the first phase of ADC elections in Manipur hills.

Meanwhile, more than 200 goods laden trucks including oil tankers and passenger buses which were stranded at Mao Gate due to the ongoing economic blockade were escorted to Imphal this afternoon.
