Drug analysts said crude products from these illegally-grown narcotic plants in Manipur reach the notorious Golden Triangle for manufacture of heroin.
Poppy cultivators in the state fetch around Rs 30,000 for a kg of the product, the analysts said adding that the quantity can be produced from the plants grown in 400 sq m.
The value of a kg of heroin in the local markets is Rs 10 lakh and it soared up to a crore in the international markets, they said.
To give a blow to the main source of funding for underground groups and save the society from harmful effects of drugs, 8 Assam Rifles personnel and Narcotic Bureau jointly carried out the week-long operation against poppy cultivation in the remote and inaccessible areas in Chandel district beginning from Monday last week.

The opening function of the annual meet was graced by Chandel A/C MLA Thangkholun Haokip, ADC Chandel Chairman Lukhosei Zou, Vice-Chairman Langhring Anal and ADC Chandel executive members Khuplen Haokip and Songjang Paosei as presidium members.
The annual meet which would feature competitions in different sports events like football, volleyball and track and field events would continue for four days during which teams representing 15 different clubs of Pansang area would be vying for top positions.

The largest annual gathering of sportspersons belonging to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo group had commen- ced from January 19 with 26 teams participating in the football tournament.
The final match featuring teams of Dongjang village and host Lonpi village was preceded by an exhibition match between a team of Chandel AC MLA Thang-kholun Haokip and Lonpi veterans.

He also noted that sportspersons, who had participated in LAGSA Meets have gone on to excel at the national and international level of compe- tition. As a part of the closing function, prizes were presented to top position winners.

NE painting camp: The 6-day long Painting Camp North East organised joint-ly by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi and Manipur State Kala Akademi concluded at the Artiste Dormitory of Department of Art and Culture located at Palace Compound today.
Artistes from different parts of North East India including Ch Premananda Roy, Th Deben and M Kool-chandra from Manipur, LT Zohrang and Lalmalsawna from Aizwal, Mizoram; Santanu Dhar and Jaban Krishna from Agartala, Tripura, Samit Roy from Silchar, Pravinkumar Nath and Abhibrata Chakravorty from Guwahati participated and displayed their works during the camp.
The valedictory function of the painting camp was attended by Commissioner of Higher and Technical Education K Moses Chalai, IAS as chief guest; Consultant of Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi US Tiwari as president and Akademi awardee Prof N Kunjamohan Singh as guest of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Moses Chalai encour- aged the participants and observed that more such camps where the artistes can interact and exchange ideas should be organised.
Prof Kunjamohan said that North East is a region rich in art and culture.
Artistes who are contributing their service to the society through art works should be identified and encouraged, he added.

Setting November 22 as the deadline for total recall of the Cabinet decision, the memorandum signed by NSUC president BS Shem-hring and KSO, Chandel unit president Thangjalet Mate categorically pointed out that by going ahead with the decision, the Government will only be inviting unnecessary consequences and paving way for communalism which would disturb peace in the district.
The surrendered cadres should be rehabilitated in the valley area, the joint memorandum demanded, while informing that the populace of Chandel have unanimously resolved to safeguard their legitimate rights and not compromise with their stand on the issue.
Meanwhile, Thadou Students’ Association (TSA), Chandel district has strongly opposed the Government policy of keeping the surrendered cadres of KCP (Lallumba) faction inside the campus of 8th MR at Leikun in Chandel district.
To avoid any unwanted consequences, the Govt should withdraw its policy, information and publicity secretary of the student body Hempu Haokip said in a statement, adding that the people want peace and harmony.
