Manipur party flays Centre over tripartite talks

Imphal, Dec 4(NNN): In the light of the low profile tripartite talk between the Union Government, State Government of Manipur and United Naga Council (UNC) yesterday in Senapati, Manipur People’s Party (MPP) has expressed strong reservations over the intention of the talk, alleging the Union Government of “aiding and abeting in disrupting the territorial integrity of Manipur”.

In a press meet at his office chamber in Imphal today, MPP president Dr Nimai Chand Luwang said that the party is against the tripartite talk between the Union Government, State Government and UNC, thereby it “opposes” and “condemns” the government of Manipur for allowing the talk to take place within the territory of Manipur.

It is surprising to learn that an issue of the formation of new state or Union Territory was raised during the talk, said the MPP president, alleging the Government of India of “aiding and abeting in disrupting the territorial integrity of Manipur.”

The party questioned the government of Manipur for sending the Chief Secretary of the State DS Poonia to the talk and sought a clarification and explanation from the government of Manipur on the term “alternative” allegedly used by the participants. “Does it mean that the government of Manipur has already assured granting a state or a Union Territory”, it asked.

“MPP condemns the Government of India in the strongest possible term for initiating the tripartite talk between Union Government, State Government and UNC”, Dr Luwang said and expressed further its discontentment against the Government of India and the State in “staging the arrest of RK Meghen”.

“The Chief Minister of Manipur had gone to Delhi to pre-plan the twist in the arrest drama of Meghen”, it alleged and said that, “while the DGP of Manipur has claimed that the State police were not engaged in the arrest of Meghen, they were in fact engaged in identifying him”, said the MPP president.

MPP has also made available to the press a memorandum sent today to Congress chief and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on the issue of the volatility of the territorial integrity of Manipur and asked for clarification on the position of the Congress on the issue.

It highlighted the agreement between the Indian National Congress Party and the then United Naga Integration Council on August 4, 1972 under the term of which the Congress Party “does not oppose Naga Integration Movement and does not consider Naga Integration Movement as anti-party, anti-national, anti-state and unconstitutional activity

“Further, it is agreed upon that no Congress Party member will be subjected to disciplinary action on the ground that he or she is involved in Naga Integration Movement.”

The memorandum asked Sonia Gandhi to make it a point to give the stand of the party on the matter.

In another press meet, MLA RK Anand said that the Government of India can only absolve itself of the “chain of lies” by releasing a white paper on the trail of RK Meghen since his alleged arrest in Dhaka on September 29 till date.

Anand sought a “concrete decision” from the Centre.
