Most domestic violence cases in Mizoram go unreported

Aizawl, Aug. 16 (PTI) : A senior psychiatrist Dr John M Ralte says that while domestic violence is extremely traumatic for the victims and also for the children, only a few of them had approached psychiatrists for clinical treatment.
The officer of the state health department says that he was not approached by such victims when he was working in the civil hospital, Aizawl “most probably due to lack of awareness”.

According to the National Family Health Survey, the picture of domestic violence in other Northeastern states is equally bad with Meghalaya accounting for 13 per cent average, Nagaland 15 per cent and Sikkim 16 per cent.

One out of five women in Mizoram suffers the insult of being slapped by husbands while seven per cent say their arms have been twisted, hairs pulled, pushed around, kicked and beaten up, the survey says.

One per cent of Mizo women say they were forced to have sex by their husbands even after pleading that they were not in a mood.

On the flip side, three per cent of the Mizo women admit they also committed violence against their husbands, but mostly as a reaction to being abused or asked to blindly obey commands by their spouses.
