I-Day: Security beefed up in North East

Agartala, Aug 13 : Security has been put on high alert across Tripura following an advisory warning issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), highly placed sources said here on Friday.

The MHA in its advisory has asked the State Government to take all possible precautionary measures to ensure peaceful Independence Day celebrations. In view of reports of militant threats in interior places of the State there should be no let up or laxity insecurity arrangements during the celebrations, the advisory said.

State Chief Minister Manik Sarkar will unfurl the tricolour at Assam Rifles ground at 9.10 am on Sunday to mark the Independence Day celebration.

Prohibitory orders have been clamped along the entire Indo-Bangla border in view of the 56th Independence Day celebration to be observed on August 15.

As part of the precautionary measures, security has been tightened in the most vulnerable Indo-Bangla border in Gandacherra and Kanchanpur subdivision where militants have been trying hard to sneak into the State’s territory to disrupt I-Day celebrations. The prohibitory orders will remain in force till October 14.

Besides, security has been beefed up in all vulnerable areas following tip-off about militant movement. The security arrangement on the National Highway (NH-44) has also been intensified to avoid any kind of attack on the vehicles.

All the security posts in interior areas have been alerted in view of the boycott call given by the outlawed groups, official sources said adding that TSR personnel have been providingsecurity coverage to the trains.

Security has also been enhanced in all the vital installations like Civil Secretariat, Raj Bhavan, Airport, market complexes and motor stands.

PTI adds: Security measures have been tightened in Manipur and Mizoram in view of the boycott call of Independence Day celebrations by insurgent outfits in the Northeastern States.

In Imphal West district people had been asked not to gather at public places as the insurgents might strike at such spots, Senior Superintendent of Police L Kailun said in Imphal.

People have been asked not to allow parking of vehicles in front of shops, markets or offices if the owners were not known. Similarly, public have been urged to inform police if anyone was found parking vehicle or moving suspiciously.

The Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF), which was formed by three major insurgent organisations of United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup (KYKL) and Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), has called a general strike and boycott of Independence Day celebrations.

While the number of policemen deployed before and during the Independence Day functions was the same as previous year, the alert level has been stepped up, SP(Aizawl) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said.

“Checking of hotels for suspicious people have been conducted in Aizawl and patrolling have been intensified in the past few days,” the SP said in Aizwal. Elaboratesecurity arrangements have been made in vital installations. – PTI
