Tripura tribal council goes to polls on May 3

Agartala: Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) will go to election on May 3.

The filing of nomination would be allowed from March 31 to April 12. The scrutiny will be conducted on April 13 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination is scheduled for April 16 and counting of polled ballot papers will be conducted on May 7.

The model code of conduct, which came into effect from Thursday will be applicable only in ADC areas, said YP Singh, State Election Commissioner, adding that the commission has already had a meeting where the overall law and order situation was reviewed.

On the security arrangement, Mr Singh said that the state government has been trying its level best to get 20 companies of additional paramilitary forces to ensure peaceful election.

The ruling CPM-led Left Front has already declared its nominees for the upcoming ADC election. Of the total 28 candidates, eight aspirants are new face while only five are women.

However, Congress finds it difficult to strike seat sharing deal with its long-time ally - Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT).

According to political analysts, the ADC election will be a direct fight between CPM led Left Front and Congress-INPT thought two more anti-left parties- BJP and Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (IPFT) will also contest the tribal council election.
