UDALGURI, March 15 – The entire North-East India and Bengal will face more problems in near future as the geographical variations on the coastal lines of Bangladesh is posing the threat of its total extinction in the future. When the crores of Bangladeshis enter the NE India and Bengal adjacent to its borders, what would happen to the demographic position of this land? Wondered Subir Bhowmick, senior correspondent of the BBC at Udalguri while taking part as resource person of panel discussion on the topic entitled ‘Global warming and its impact on Assam- the way forward’.
The threadbare panel discussion held today on the second day of the five-day Udalguri book fair and Science Exhibition conducted by Dhruba Hazarika, Deputy Commissioner of Darrang district drew immense attention of the public, particularly the students and teachers community of the district.
Expressing grave concern over the impending danger being caused by the global warming, the senior journalist predicted that the Chinese move to divert the Tsangpo (the Brahmaputra in Assam) and the Mekong rivers originating in Tibet to make the Gobi desert of China a food zone would turn the whole of Assam and adjoining region a droughthit zone. “ Tibet is important for Asia as 80 per cent of rivers come from Tibet. The South-North Water Diversion Project of China to divert the Tsangpo and the Mekong towards the Gobi desert will have, no doubt an adverse effect on NE India which is really dangerous,” he observed.
The thought-provoking panel discussion was made more meaningful by Dr RK Barman of ASTEC, Guwahati, Dr Pradip Sarmah of Cotton College and Sanjiv Sabhapandit, a leading social activist of NE India. They dwelt on the various impacts of global warming and do’s and don’t’s to be followed by the people to save the green earth, a collective effort to make a beautiful earth for the present and future generation.
Along with it, a State level quiz competition was also held which was conducted by Digambar Patowary , correspondent of The Hindustan Times, spot essay and drawing competion on the occasion.
