NEW DELHI: Meghalaya was brought under President’s rule on Thursday and the Assembly kept under suspended animation.
According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson here, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil approved the decision taken by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday.
“The President has signed the proclamation for imposing Central rule in Meghalaya,” the spokesperson said.
The Cabinet had agreed with the recommendation sent in his report by Governor R.S. Mooshahary who said that Meghalaya was undergoing a spell of political uncertainty and instability and the Constitutional machinery had broken down.
Senior NCP leader P.A. Sangma, the architect of the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA), rushed to the capital from Shillong with seven other alliance leaders. He said the alliance would move a petition in the Supreme Court on Friday challenging the Centre’s decision.
Briefing mediapersons, Mr. Sangma described the government’s decision as “unconstitutional and unethical,” tantamount to defacing the Constitution.
He announced plans to launch a “non-stop” agitation of all non-Congress parties in the North-East against the Centre’s move.
